What is a transit in Astrology? Meaning and how you can use them
What are Transits in astrology - in simple terms, transits are continuous movements of the planets as they transit your birth chart or some other memorable occasion like a solar, Jupiter or Saturn, return
Outer planet transits Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto last the longest and inner planets ( Mercury, Venus, and Mars and luminaries( Sun and Moon) are the shortest transits lasting 1.5 days (moon) to 12-15 months (Jupiter)
“What helps luck is a habit of watching for opportunities, of having a patient, but restless mind, of sacrificing one’s ease or vanity, of uniting a love of detail to foresight, and of passing through hard times bravely and cheerfully..” victor cherbuliez

Are transits important in astrology? A very in-depth guided
Transits are important in astrology, you can calculate them here, and the most important thing to remember about transits in astrology is that your birth chart placements and aspects will affect the current transits aspect
So, for example, if the transiting moon sextiles the sun. Still, you have natal sun square the moon than, this will affect how the transit sextile of the moon and sun affects you personally.
Moon sextile the sun is seen as a favourable transit, but it may not be as positive for you due to your natal chart placements.

What does a transit mean in astrology?
All planets travel along the Earth’s ecliptic belt; when planets travel around this belt, past the points of where your natal planets were at the time of your birth.
They make aspects to your natal chart, which happen when planets or asteroids such as Chiron, Vesta or Pallas, during their natural, second to second.
Hour to hour and day to day movements make aspects with the positions of your natal chart planets and asteroids.
They are transits to transit, transits, which are used in electional- event astrology.
Electional- event astrology is used to pick out the best time to do particular things, such as getting married, giving a presentation, having surgery, etc.
Historically transit to transit ( electional astrology) has been used to plan battles. Travel, make talismans and seals such as a good luck talisman or keep the “evil out” seal.
Electional astrology shows how planetary movements affect us as a collective.
Still, as you are part of the collective, as is every person living on Earth, you can use the daily, weekly and monthly movements to help you live your best life.
After all your birth, was an electional event, right?
Whether your birth was planned or not by humans.
Your addition to the Earth was planned by the superconsciousness and, therefore, changed the collective consciousness.
I used these transits to transit placements in my weekly and monthly astrology updates; to help you pick out the best times to do things during these times.
Planning for your best life
After all, the planetary movements give out vibrations. It’s up to you if you use them or not, think of it like a lottery ticket, yes your chances of winning are slim, but you have to buy the ticket to be in with a chance of winning, right?
Transit to transit are best used alongside your transit to natal, transits aspects and placements.
I believe the power of transits to transit goes beyond planning weddings etc.
Applying planetary energies by using current and transit to natal is a holistic way to work with planetary energies.
It’s what they call in baseball or rounders- the English version of the game.
Covering all your bases….going for the home run, this is reaching your highest potential in terms of living.
“Most people consider life a battle, but it is not a battle, it is a game, you can control any situation if you first control yourself.” Florence Scovel Shinn.
Transit to transits shows how the planets interact with each other at any given moment.
So you can use the energies to amplify your life progression, such as moon trine Uranus.
This is an excellent time to start new things or gather the strength to continue working on your plans. Find more independence and uncover the barriers that stop you from becoming your best self.
Such as exercise or diet regime, creating content, research, learning to play an instrument, etc.
How do transits affect me?
In general, transit in astrology can indicate the type of experiences you can encounter during their duration, as well as the types of people you will interact with.
Keeping track of transits can help you make sense of your life experiences and give you the power to transform your life by taking care of your emotional, psychological, spiritual-higher consciousness, financial and physical needs.
Following transits can help you live your best life prepare for situations, as although you may not be able to stop certain events, you can control how you respond to them.
Transits involving the moon, sun, Venus and Mars (inner planets) can last from a few hours to 1-2 months, in general, but transits involving Saturn, Jupiter, Pluto, Uranus and Neptune (outer planets) can last from a few months to 25 +years.
Pluto transits last the longest (up to 30 years), and the moon transits are the shortest (2.5 – 3 days max).
To keep track of transits, you can use an online transit calculator. Still, for deeper and more personalised interpretations, you may want to get an astrologer to look at your chart.
The sign, i.e. sun in Aries transiting your natal chart, the aspects such as transiting Mars sextile your natal mars, and the houses activated when transiting.
For example, mars transiting your 3rd house or Uranus transits to your 10th house etc.
All have equal importance when determining what any particular transit means for you.
What are the transits of planetsin astrology ?
Another way transits work, let’s say you were born when the sun was in the 17 degrees of Aquarius. Transiting Jupiter is now in Leo at 17 degrees; this would mean that transiting Jupiter is in opposition (180 degrees away) from your Natal sun.
Let’s, for example, say Jupiter is currently in the 9th house of your natal chart; we would say that Jupiter is transiting your 9th house.
When a transiting planet moves through your natal houses, the experiences and traits that house controls. Come into focus.
As well as the experiences of any house(s) that is activated by transit that any planet in that house makes aspect too.
A working example of how following transits in astrology can enrich your life
So, for example, let’s say that Jupiter in the 9th house of your natal chart squares Venus in your 6th house; this means that transiting Jupiter will stimulate the 9th and 6th houses.
In your natal chart, as well as the house, it is currently transiting in, so let’s say it’s presently transiting your 1st house.
So the matters controlled by your 1st, 6th and 9th house will all be activated.
As well as the house(s) of the planets Jupiter and Venus aspects in your birth chart.
Complex, right? Well, it need not be as an astrologer can interpret exactly what these mean for you.
For instance, continuing the above example, you may have to travel for work (6th house).
While you are abroad for your work trip, you could meet a new lover who lives in that country (Venus and 9th house Jupiter influence).
Your travels abroad could change how you think about the world (9thhouse), and you could decide you have not been giving back enough.
So you could choose to be more of service to others (6thhosue-12th house polarity and Jupiter is co-ruler of the 12th house).
You can return to your home country a change person and project (1st house) your new persona into your environment and lifestyle choices. (6thhosue)
This is just an example; Venus transits could indicate a new lover.
Still, not every time Venus transit, you will meet a new lover.
But you could decide to change your inner beliefs about love, possession for better or worse, it depends.
You also will not meet wild and eccentric people every time Uranus is involved in an transit to your birth chart. Nor will you make plans to revolutionise your life.
Sometimes during a Uranus transit, you could just choose to dye your hair a different colour try new food or drink; you will not make plans to take over the world, so to speak, each time.
This doesn’t limit the importance of transits because using the planetary energies of transit to transits, which are how the planet react to each other, without involving your natal chart.
You can use these aspects to help you with your spiritual- higher consciousness, career, spiritual, financial development.
Nevertheless, the themes of each transit are generally right, such as Uranus keywords are unpredictable change, awaking experiences, but the level of the extremity of these changes varies.
By using your willpower, focusing on what you can do and not what you cannot do.
“What is now proved was once only imagined.”

“The world’s greatest achievers have been those who have always stayed focussed on their goals and have been consistent in their efforts.”
― Dr Roopleen
Tis in ourselves that we are thus or thus. Our bodies are our gardens to the which our wills are gardeners.”
― William Shakespeare
Each astrologer interprets transits differently, but here I write the basics.
In simple terms, transit works to activate – set off the different parts of your intellect, psyche- subconscious-emotions- soul history.
In an attempt to wake you up to your authentic self-expression and to help you reach your highest potential.
They are 12 astrological houses, and I explain briefly what they mean at the end of this article. How I write transits interpretations is what I call applied practical astrology.
Why you should pay attention to your transits?
“Being in control of your life and having realistic expectations about your day-to-day challenges are the keys to stress management.
Which is perhaps the most important ingredient to living a happy, healthy and rewarding life”. Marilu Henner
Nothing in life is fixed, nor is astrology. However, they are certain themes you can predict when a planet makes an aspect via transit to your natal planet.
Although nothing in astrology or life is guaranteed, they are things you can do to apply the energies of the planets coming together.
So you can make an intuitive or rational decision to use the planetary energies to help you improve your life.
To me, astrology is a spiritual-higher consciousness-psychological-practical tool.
It is best applied to your day to day life by taking conscious action to use the planetary vibrations.
So you can make the best of your current incarnation on Earth.
Transit affect us individually and collectively, such as the Pluto-Saturn conjunction that was in effect in the 1980s.
Which caused a global economic recession, high unemployment, the Aids virus epidemic, the cold war and conflicts in the middle east.
In 2020 we had a repeat of the 1980s, Saturn Pluto conjunction, starting with the COVID 19 pandemic.
The tensions caused by America leaving Afghanistan, many people facing poverty worldwide.
Rising inflation and economic uncertainty, supplier chain shortages, global lockdowns, travel restrictions, and other privileges we took for granted before the pandemic
And again, we see the conflict between Russia and Ukraine mirroring events that took place back in the 1980s, with the Iraq VS Iran war.
So following astrology transits can help you be forewarned about events that can happen in your internal and external life, so you can prepare for them.
Forethought spares afterthought.- Amelia Barr
“Plan ahead or find trouble on the doorstep”.- Confucius
After all, life here on Earth, aint nothing but history repeating, with some new occurrences thrown in for unpredictability.
“To enjoy good health, to bring true happiness to one’s family, to bring peace to all, one must first discipline and control one’s own mind. If a man (person) can control his mind he can find the way to Enlightenment, and all wisdom and virtue will naturally come to him”. Buddha
It is important to note that at times if you ignore an internal call to change something in your life, an external event may force this transformation on you.
Astrologer Robert hand says that as a species, we individually and collectively act upon the universe, and in return, we individually and collectively.
Receive reactions from the universe via the field of consciousness. Which we are all tapped into whether we are aware of this or not.
In simple terms, cause and effect, a word, an action, an event triggers another word, action and event, and so forth, kinda like in the movie final destination.
A sound of thunder and the butterfly effect and as seen in the TV series dead like me, being Erica, fringe and continuum and to some extent lost.
How do you read transits in astrology?
Transits show us the ways that we are individually and collectively affected by the ongoing movements of the planets, asteroids and the cosmos.
Transits show how the universe’s vibrations are working with your natal chart.
So you know when it is the best time to do particular things and when it’s best to avoid certain situations.
I am saying this for the 3rd time. It is crucial you understand how transits affect each individual is not fixed- a sure thing, nevertheless.
If you have intense Pluto energy in your natal chart, such as moon conjunct ascendant, moon or Pluto in the 1st, 2nd,8th 9th or 12th house.
Then you could experience Pluto transits much deeper than someone who doesn’t have strong Pluto energy in their chart.
For some people, transits trigger an internal response, where you change on the subconscious- psychological- spiritual or emotional level. For others, transits are felt by other people’s actions and external events.
It all depends on your level of awareness as an individual, how your environmental experiences have shaped your life, your soul age.
Incarnating purpose and whether you have incarnated into it( are aware of it). And whether you follow your own path or conform to what is expected of you.
Typical the split in human behaviour comes from trying to live up, to social, cultural, family and national standards. Life is typically a long process of deprogramming from what you were told to believe in and who you were meant to be.
Others expectations into self-destructive thoughts or behaviours; this is not to judge. This demonstrates they are various reasons why many of us do not follow the path of our highest potential.
“The only real, true, permanent way to destroy your mind control is to work through the memories. It’s unfortunate because it’s unpleasant. It hurts to work through your memories; they have pain. Memories are not just made up of ideas, and thoughts and storylines, they are also made up of physical pain, and emotional pain and sadness and distress and despair and all of those things are part of memories.”― Alison Miller
All humans have free will after all, well, most of us, for I am aware a lot of the people in the world are oppressed.
Whether it is by wars in their country, living under tyrannical regimes or being imprisoned by their family, cultural or religious expectations.
“I can control my destiny, but not my fate. Destiny means there are opportunities to turn right or left, but fate is a one-way street. I believe we all have the choice as to whether we fulfil our destiny, but our fate is sealed”. Paulo Coelho
More about transits in astrology
As a holistic astrologer, I do believe, although I cannot offer solid proof, for they are some realisations each person-soul will have to come to on their own, after their life and soul experiences.
Transit active our subconscious, the part of us that wants to be free of the limiting beliefs and preconceptions of our conscious, rational mind and behaviours.
Transit does not make things happen; instead, they reveal areas of growth to us.
By bringing you inner thoughts and external events that make you question your reality, intending to get you to, take personal responsibility for your life.
Although more often than not, we ignore questioning and learning and keep on repeating our individual and collective past, then call it fate, as Carl Jung would say.
So it is crucial we don’t generalise transits because not everyone will experience the same things when a particular transit is active.
But what we can predict is that if you are willing to take action and use the energies of any given transit.
You can improve and become an active participant in your own life rather than a bystander.
To sum, astrological transit work in 2 main ways
- Inner changes trigger introspection- dreams or personal thoughts- (subconscious inclinations), leading you to change your conscious thoughts and habits.
Such as, you may get a thought to continue your education or change your job, and you take action on these inner impressions, leading to a conscious self-led- personal transformation
- External changes caused by personal or illnesses/deaths of others, losing a job, conversations, all forms of socialisation – meeting new people, a lover leaving you, being cut off from family funds or resources.
Group associations, research, watching movies or tv shows- taking the opportunity to transform in some way, global events- i.e. current pandemic, wars, economic recessions- forced personal transformation.
As you can see, there are many ways transit can affect us, and the events that trigger them vary, but ultimately, the two ways transit works, they trigger a conscious or forced transformation-change in thoughts or behaviour.
Overview of what energies the aspects of transiting planets bring:
CONJUNCTION Combing of energy, Harmonising or annoying
^ OPPOSITION teaching-educating or harmful-unhelpful
_ TRINE……….. Melodious – in tune-working in unison
` SQUARE……. pressure- anxiety-inducing – overcoming conflict
a SEXTILE……. effortless, imaginative and balanced
e QUINCUNX… energies that are going in a different direction
Are transits accurate in astrology?
Following your daily transit can be a valuable thing to do, and they are accurate.
Precession of the equinox is the process where the fixed stars and zodiac constellations move in relation to the Earth seasons because the Earth wobbles on its axis.
The precession rate is around 1 degree every 72 years, so right now, when you are born with the sun in Gemini, it can actually be in the constellation of Taurus.
So yes, transit can be accurate if precession is corrected; this is important. An uncorrected transit to natal interpretation may say transit is taking place in your 4th house, but it’s actually in your 5th.
In terms of aspects, you could have a natal square transit involving Your natal Uranus and Transiting mars.
But if the calculation is not precession corrected, the dates of this square will be wrong, so they may start or end sooner.
Are some transit better than the others?
Errrm well, no, and yes, of course, you could say squares, oppositions and quincunxes and worse than sextile, conjunctions and trine transits.
But this is not strictly too, for although mediation and mindfulness is good.
Too much of it can be a bad thing if you do not take care of the practicalities of your life or are not sensitive to the emotional and psychological states of others or yourself!!
Then, seeing life through the lens of mindfulness or engaging in too much mediation can be harmful.
For instance, your best friend may come to you upset about something, and she suffers from depression; telling her to be mindful, and she should only think about positive thoughts, although you mean well, is not the best thing to do.
Although mindfulness can help with depression, depression is often something you have to learn to live with, and they are times when life gets us all down.
Toxic positive that can be induced from meditation often does more harm than good. Yes, mediation is a good tool.
But if it makes you come out of touch with the emotional states of those who have not transcended or, realistically speaking, learned to manage their earthly problems yet, then it’s toxic.
So if you tell them something like, you’re depressed because you’re not mindful, this is, in fact, incorrect.
Because many depressions are usually formed from being too attentive to your own thoughts-and overthinking.
Transits in astrology therapy
So while sextiles, conjunctions and trine transits are viewed as beneficial, this is not always the case; more often than not, we let the energy of these transits go to waste.
This is because conjunctions, trines and sextiles often allow things to flow. Ask many astrologers about the fact that most people whose natal charts are full or trines and other easy aspects.
More often than not, do not turn into the geniuses, superstars, CEOs and dynamos; their birth charts often state they could be.
Because easy aspects do not create, the tension, squares and other challenging aspects do. Hard aspects make you question why and motivate you to solve your problems.
This is why more often than not, the most successful people have natal charts. Most astrologers would call doom charts because they are littered with challenging aspects.
This is not to say that those with lots of positive aspects in their charts do not succeed and that all people with challenging aspects do; this is not the case.
More often than not, easy aspects, natally or by transit, do not give the momentum- motivation to change, but difficult aspects do.
If anything, easy aspects such as sextiles and trines reinforce your bad habits and flaws.
Easy aspects can blind you to your own self-destructive thoughts and behaviours in general.
Imagine someone who keeps on overspends, and their parents or friends always lends them money to cover their monthly shortfall.
So this person never faces the consequence of their bad spending habits.
This behaviour is typical of how trines, sextiles and conjunctions can work. You don’t face the consequences of your actions; things come easy to you, so you may come to believe life will always stay the same and you always have what you need.
You can become indolent – lazy, thinking everything will fall from the sky into your life, and at times this can be the change.
But just like the seasons and tides, your luck will eventually change.
Of course, not everyone with trines and other “easy” aspects has a trouble-free life. Nor does everyone wh squares in their natal chart have a difficult life.
Now let’s use the same example, but in this case the overspender’s friends and family refuse to lend them money.
So they have to face their own issues of poor money management and seek solutions to solve their problems.
Learning to manage their finances or go without things when their money runs out.
This is the difference between hard-negative aspects ( oppositions, squares or quincunx) and positive aspects ( trine, conjunctions and sextiles).
Challenging aspects are in your face; you will have to deal with their repercussion. Forced by an internal or external event, positive- easy aspects can go by without you knowing.
Astrological transits are best used when you apply the planetary vibrations to your life so you can get the best out of it.
And even if transit is a “bad “one, just by being aware that planetary energies are causing problems in your life.
Can help you negate the harmful effects of these transit by changing your thoughts and behaviour.
So that you float and at your best swim the tides of tension fuelled transits, rather than drowning in them.
What does a transit mean in astrology? Continued
“Your life is the sum result of all the choices you make, both consciously and unconsciously. If you can control the process of choosing, you can take control of all aspects of your life. You can find the freedom that comes from being in charge of yourself”. Robert Foster Bennett
The changes difficult aspects bring can be irritating, uncomfortable and even cruel at first.
But if you let go of the old and invite the new, emancipating yourself from the things that hold you back.
Freeing you up ,to reach your highest potential in life if you make a strategic plan to reach your highest potential.
By aligning your thoughts and actions to secure a better future for yourself. The tension squares, oppositions and quincunxes make are sent as a test to strengthen your resolve- determination – willpower.
After all, we can only control how we respond to the events in our lives, nothing else.
We cannot control external events or people, but we can manage how we respond to the obstacles we face in life.
And although we may not be able to stop our psychological and emotional wounds, we can control how they affect our lives.
Typically by facing them, understanding them, forgiving your past mistakes, learning to love ourselves.
Partaking in self-care and doing the work to heal the trauma that lives in your subconscious mind.
Transit highlight how our childhood programming, past heartbreaks, traumas still affect our lives.
By bringing events and thoughts to us that occur to make you think and eventually make changes to your life, And as you know us , humans often hate change.
Preferring our comfort zones, so the effects of bad aspects in transit, oppositions etc, are only made so, because we tend to want to cling to what we should let go of.
Often stubbornly, like when you have fallen out of love with your partner, and they may have also fallen out of love with you.
But you both hang on tightly to the relationship at all cost.
Because you are used to the familiar and don’t want to go through the whole dating process again.
A Uranus square Mars transit may bring a person into your or your partners’ life, which causes the breakdown of the relationship.
So instead of things ending nicely, they end badly due to unfaithfulness.
Going back to my earlier example about someone who overspends, who is always rescued from being without money, under a Uranus oppose Saturn transit.
They may suddenly be faced with an intervention by their friends and family.
Who say no more to their individualistic (Uranus) ways and force them to face the consequences (Saturn) of their problems.
As you can see, the events that happen during planetary transits are trying to bring something to our attention for better or worse.
In my view, transits are not good or bad, because I explained too much of a good thing can be bad, and a bad thing can be good. I view all aspects in birth charts or transits as impartial-unbiased.
It’s how we respond to our natal and transit placements and life in general, which matters.
Earth school is one big learning place, and we have to become wiser sooner or later of the many things that take place here. We can either control ourselves or be controlled by external events or others.
We can apply the vibrations and opportunities given to you by transits or waste them. The choice is yours.
“The most difficult thing is the decision to act; the rest is merely tenacity. The fears are paper tigers. You can do anything you decide to do. You can act to change and control your life; and the procedure, the process is its own reward”. Amelia Earhart
If you strengthen your resolve, taking the time to find your weakness and making them your strengths, for, after all, it’s the things that we don’t control that control us.
The fast-moving planets, rather than pay attention to what aspects each of these planets makes daily, which can be alot, especially if the moon is involved.
It is best to pay attention to the houses ,the faster- planets are transiting through, which last longer. moving ( Moon,Sun, Venus, Mercury and Mars)
Note the exact time each planet stays in your natal houses, depends on the size of each house, in your natal planet.
Because some house are bigger than the others, unless you use the whole house system or something similar.
Yet it is not good, especially in your first few years of astrology investigation. To pay attention to Moon, Venus, mars or sun transits as you could drive yourself insane.
However, if you’re using astrology knowledge for business ventures or to invest in the stock market or other speculation.
You may want to pay attention to day to day transits of the sun, moon, Venus and mars, as well as the other planets.
I recommend you do your best to stay grounded when using transit and know free will, trumps all, don’t let transit predictions make your life worse; they are meant to enrich your life.
Sun and Moon transit to planets typically last 2-4 hours, but the effects of a new or full moon can, lunar and solar eclipses can last for 4-6 weeks at times longer.
Moon transit through the houses can last 1-2 .5 days.
Mercury transit to other planets in your natal chart, can last anywhere between a few hours, depending on the aspect to about 5 days, mercury transits through the houses can last between 4-6 weeks,
Venus transits to other planets in your natal chart can anywhere from a few hours, to last 1-3 days depending on the aspect. Venus transits through the houses can last anywhere from 20 days to around a month, but sometimes longer if Venus goes retrograde,
Mars transits to other planets in your natal chart can last anywhere between1-3 days in general, Mars transits through the house last 4-6 weeks.
Jupiter transits to other planets in your natal chart can last anywhere between 3-7 days in general, but can last up longer, Jupiter transits through the house last 12-13 months.
Saturn transits to other planets in your natal chart can last anywhere between for a few days and 1-3 weeks in general, Saturn transits through the house last 2 years and 3-4 months.
Uranus transits to other planets in your natal chart can last a few weeks to a few months. In general, Uranus transits through the house last about 7 years.
Neptune transits to other planets in your natal chart can last,1 month to 6-9+ Months in general.
Neptune transits through all the houses last 14 years.
Pluto transits to other planets in your natal chart can last a few months to a few years, in general, Pluto transits through the house last anywhere between 12-30-31 years.
Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are generally used to write yearly horoscopes predictions.
And these transits are good for making strategic long terms plans.
How do transits affect me? To sum up
Some of the biggest transits in your life are your Saturn return which happens between ages 28-29, usually happens at age 28, but I have seen charts when it started at age 29.
Saturn square Saturn and Saturn opposite sun can also be significant impacting transits.
Pluto square Pluto transits, which can end up as Pluto square Pluto and any other planets you have in that house if they happen in a tight conjunction formation.
Such as you have Pluto, Saturn and Jupiter in your 1st, 8th or 12th house, Pluto is at 2 degrees Scorpio; Mercury at 3 degrees Scorpio; Pluto may end up squaring both of these planets at the same time.
Uranus square Uranus happens in your early 20s and 60s, which can bring about big changes in your life.
Neptune square Neptune is seen as the mid-life crises aspect and happens between age 41-43.
Uranus opposite Uranus can also be a massive influence and happens between ages 40-41.
But I don’t want to put any aspect above the other, in intensity and meaning.
Obviously, transit that lasts for longer periods, like Pluto square Pluto, could significantly impact. But it depends on how intense Pluto energies are in your natal chart.
Most astrologers would say Venus sextile mars transits are easier aspect than Pluto square Pluto; they are shorter, but if you have strong mars and Venus energy in your natal chart.
You may feel your Venus sextile Mars transit deeper than Pluto square Pluto. And if the Venus trine sextile transit affects you profoundly because they occur more often.
They can have a more destabilising effect on your life than Pluto square Pluto which happens once in a lifetime. However, some people never experience this aspect.
To be frank, how each transit affects you depends on your natal chart placements, whether you have a lot of easier aspects like trines, sextiles and conjuncts.
However, conjuncts can be tricky, like moon conjunct Pluto, so as you see, the question of how transits affect you is not easy to answer.
This is why it is best to have an astrologer look at all factors to determine how each transit can affect you.
If you feel stuck, computerised interpretations can help, also.
